Love the idea of "going more slowly," in life and literature! I think it's a writer's voice that captivates me or not in the first chapter of a book, not necessarily what happens. Whatever makes the character come alive in those pages is what makes me keep reading.

I agree with all of this. When I was writing my last book it opened slow like yours, but I couldn't get any traction with it. I ended up adding a more exciting scene to open the book and then moved the the quieter stuff. I like the idea of getting to know the characters before we blow up their world. Thanks for posting this!
